From July 17th to July 19th, Luigi Sabatino, professional baasketball coach from Gators Basketball Club, trained primary children at risk of social exclusion from Colegio Santiago Apóstol Cabanyal during the Summer School that the school organises every year.
The scheduled activities included:
1) MINIBASKET LESSON
Age : 6-8 years old (Grupo Amarillo)
Goals : motor control; dribbling skills; transient capacity
Everyone with the ball, dribbling around the space of the pitch trying not to bump into each other. Then, add one or more “hunters” who try to touch the other fleeing children while dribbling.
In pairs, both with the ball, the one in front leads, the other chases, always trying to stay at the same distance. At the signal change role. Variant: the person in front can do more things to solicit the reaction of the person behind (sit down, jump, spin around himself, vary speed and direction, etc.)
Always in pairs, whoever is in front decides when to start dribbling towards the basket to try to score: the challenge is who scores first.
Subsequently whoever is in front is without the ball; the one behind decides when to pass him by dribbling towards the basket in an attempt to maintain the initial advantage and score a basket. The other must defend to recover the ball. Variant: if the defender recovers the ball he can counterattack on the other basket.
The pairs thus formed arrange themselves to form quartets in a row in alternating order (defender-attacker-defender-attacker): the attacker in second position with the ball decides when to start attacking together with his partner on the basket which he decides:play 2 against 2.
Play 3 on 3.
2) MINIBASKET LESSON
Age : 11-12 years old (grupo rojo)
Goals : dribbling skills; dribble shot combination; transient capacity; play 1vs1
Two rows at the end of the field; the first in each row compete to see who scores the basket first after having covered the entire length of the court in dribble. Variant: have “doors” on the field through which those in front decide to pass; whoever is behind must make the same choice.
Afterwards, the first to score has the right to attack on the other basket too; the other has the task of trying to defend by holding the ball between both hands.
Same arrangement, only one row with ball: both advance passing the ball alternately; at the instructor’s signal, whoever has the ball attacks the other. if the defender recovers the ball he has the opportunity to counterattack.
Form trios lined up in front of the basket, outside the three-point line. the central one has the ball and decides when to dribble towards the basket in an attempt to score. The other two try to defend to recover the ball and play on the other side 2 on 1. Variant: quartets, play 2 on 2.
Play 3 on 3.
3) MINIBASKET LESSON
Age : 3-4-5 years old (grupo infantil)
Goals : basic motor patterns: walking, running, jumping, throwing, catching etc.; space time difference.
Try playing and dribbling like zoo animals would
Through storytelling, leave room for the children’s imagination by transporting them to a zoo where they encounter different animals from time to time: trying to dribble, throw and shoot baskets trying to respect the characteristics of each individual animal (example: elephant=slow and noisy; cheetah=fast and agile; turtle=slow and clumsy, etc.)
At a certain moment we meet two rather little monkeys, brother and sister, who challenge each other in a series of ball manipulation games: even the children try to reproduce the same challenges by facing each other.
Form four or more teams: each represents an animal. Hold relay races with the rule that whoever makes the basket has the power to transform all the others into his own animal, therefore forcing the others to proceed with the pace of the animal in question. Variant: create more complex paths to solicit the solution through motor skills.
All lined up in front of the basket are the gazelles; one or more children placed in front of a row of circles (the path) are the lions. Each gazelle makes its own shot, if it scores the lion moves backwards on the path, if it misses the lion advances. Having reached the last circle, if the gazelles continue to make mistakes, the lion is free to “eat” the gazelles that run away across the field.
4) MINIBASKET LESSON
Age : 9-12 years old (grupo verde y rojo)
Goals : ball handling; dribble capacity; 1 on 1; transient capacity
Everyone with the ball free to dribble around the field; whenever you want you can challenge a partner in a ball handling or dribbling competition. Variant: challenge pass stealers.
Always free to dribble in the field, play to challenge each other in the third portion of the midfield; one has the power, when he wants he can start dribbling towards the basket in a challenge to whoever scores first.
Against each other we challenge each other to deflect the ball while dribbling; whoever deflects the ball first can attack the basket, the other must recover the ball and try to defend with the ball in his hands. If the attacker doesn’t score, the defender can start dribbling towards the opposite basket with the other one who, after having recovered the ball, defends with the ball in his hands.
5) MINIBASKET LESSON
Age : 6-8 years old (grupo Amarillo)
Goals : let’s learn to play as a team!
Form four teams that face each other in a mini tournament where each team will eventually face all the others.
Each team must elect a captain who will help the team manage the changes to be made during the matches.
Each team has the opportunity to call a time out to organize themselves.
At the end of the matches, after a short meeting, all the kids must report the various impressions (things that went well or things that went wrong, etc.) regarding the matches played.
In trios, two face each other to deflect the ball while dribbling; the one without the ball is waiting for the outcome of the challenge and will receive the ball from whoever loses it: whoever wins the challenge attacks the basket, whoever loses it defends after having recovered and passed the ball to the third player; the third player waits on the dribble for the change of possession to start attacking on the opposite side against the attacker.
Play 3 on 3
